What is a Skincare Routine?
A skincare routine is a combination of products that when used in a specific order are intended to support a healthy skin barrier and complexion.
Many people have questions about creating a skincare routine, such as what is the correct order of application and how to choose the ideal products for their skin type.
Our first recommendation is to choose clean products. Clean products are those without questionable ingredients in their formulation, such as petrolatum, parabens and lead.
In other words, opt for products with natural and organic ingredients. All products on the Natural Mum website are either Natural and/or Organic.
Another important aspect in a skincare routine is knowing your skin type but before this let’s discuss what a skincare routine can provide for you.
A skincare routine provides immediate and long-term benefits, including skin hydration and nourishment, acne reduction, control of excess oiliness or dryness, slowing down the effects of skin aging, improvement of skin tone, reduction of wrinkles, fine lines and expression marks, as well as protection against solar radiation and a lower risk of developing skin cancer.
To achieve these incredible results, learn how your skin type influences your skincare routine, the proper order of skincare product application and also some additional tips from Natural Mum.
What are the different types of skin?
Skin types are classified based on prominent characteristics, such as:
Normal Skin: Typically, normal skin shows no changes in sebum production. It can be identified as skin with closed pores and without sensitivity.
Oily Skin: This type of skin exhibits excessive sebum production, leading to clogged pores and a tendency towards blackheads and acne.
Combination Skin: In this case, some parts of the face have normal skin, while the T-zone (forehead and nose) displays oily characteristics.
Dry Skin: Dry skin is more sensitive and may show signs of dehydration due to low sebum production, including redness, tightness and a whitish appearance.
Each skin type requires specific care. For oily skin, the focus should be on cleansing without exaggeration, while for dry skin, hydration should not be overlooked.
What should you incorporate into a Skincare Routine?
The foundation of skincare consists of three steps: cleansing, hydration and protection. If you're not in the habit, it's ideal to start with these basics every morning.
Establish a planned time or a dedicated moment for your morning skincare routine until it becomes automatic—perhaps after a shower, after brushing your teeth or before selecting your daily attire.
Night-time skincare is also important, with a focus on the cleansing step to remove impurities that have accumulated during the day, such as pollution and makeup residue, followed by hydration.
As your skincare routine becomes a habit, you can incorporate additional steps like toning, eye care and illuminating products. Check them out below!
What is the correct order to layer skincare products?
To create a skincare routine, it's crucial to know that the skin requires care both in the morning and at night. The steps are almost the same. Here's a step-by-step guide to achieving the best results with your skincare routine:
Step 1: Cleansing
Use cleansing products to eliminate accumulated impurities on the skin. Our suggestion is to use the Dr. Hauschka Soothing Cleansing Milk, gentle enough for all skin types.
It also effectively removes makeup and impurities, leaving the skin clean, hydrated, and soft. The Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Cream can also be used if you need a little more gentle exfoliation.
Step 2: Toning
Toning is important to keep the skin moist and to facilitate the absorption of the next skincare product in your routine (either a serum or moisturiser).
Step 3: Hydration
Finally, we move on to the serum and moisturiser stage. Here, you can use denser products or opt for serums with a lighter and finer texture for treatment and hydration.
Natural Serum recommendations by skin type -
Normal Skin: Dr. Hauschka Night Serum is a hydrating serum made from organic rose apple fruit, great for all skin types.
Oily Skin: Dr. Hauschka Night Serum is also great for those with oily skin too because it has an oil-free formula.
Combination Skin: We recommend the Night Serum for Combination skin as well.
After you apply your serum it's time to seal it in with a Moisturiser. Here are Natural Mums natural moisturiser recommendations by skin type -
Normal Skin: The Dr. Hauschka Quince Day Cream soothes and protects normal skin or slightly dry skin.
Oily Skin: The Dr. Hauschka Melissa Day Cream is best for oily skin, it helps to reduce any oily shine and also calms and balances the skin.
Combination Skin: For combination skin try either the Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream Light or Dr. Hauschka Balancing Day Lotion. The Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream has a thicker consistency than the Dr. Hauschka Balancing Day Lotion. But both sink into the skin well.
Dry Skin: For dry skin try the Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream, Dr. Hauschka Apricot Day Cream or Tinted Day Cream, all are hydrating moisturisers. Or if you have mature skin, try the Dr. Hauschka Regenerating Day Cream, it specifically targets fine lines and wrinkles.
Sensitive Skin: If you have sensitive skin, try Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream, it not only hydrates but deeply soothes reddened and irritated skin.
Step 4: Sunscreen Protection
One of the most crucial steps in the skincare routine is sunscreen protection, sunscreen is essential for both short and long-term healthy skin care.
Sunscreen helps to prevent the signs of ageing and conditions like melasma and skin cancer.
We recommend Mother SPF to ensure high protection against UVB and UVA radiation naturally.
Sunscreen recommendations -
Mother SPF30 Natural Physical Sunscreen - SPF30 for face and body
Mother SPF Tinted Touch Up Mineral SPF50 - Tinted Sunscreen with Bruch applicator
Mother SPF Universal Face SPF50 - SPF50 for face
Sunscreen should be applied daily, even when staying indoors, as blue light from screens can be harmful to skin health.
Apply sunscreen in your morning skincare routine and reapply sunscreen every 2 hours for extended protection throughout the day.
Step 5: Illumination/Bronzing
To elevate your skincare routine try incorporating an illuminator or a bronzer or both!
Bronzer: The Dr. Hauschka Translucent Bronzing Tint will give you that natural bronzed tan skin without the harmful effects of the sun.
TIP: You can mix these products with your moisturiser and apply all over or you can target specific areas of your face to highlight and/or bronze the skin.
Step 6: Lip Hydration
Finally, after you have applied all your skin care products don’t forget about your lips. Lips need care too to keep them soft and supple.

The Night-time Skincare Routine
If you're unsure about the nighttime skincare routine, don't worry; we haven't finished yet! At the end of the day, the steps are similar, with the routine starting with cleansing.
Following the normal cleansing routine, we recommend using exfoliating products twice a week to enhance the removal of dead cells and external agents such as pollution and product residues.
We do not recommend harsh chemicals to exfoliate the skin as this can harm the delicate skin on the face.
If your skin is drier or mature, we suggest using masks during the week too.
The golden tip for which order to use your products is to look at the product texture: if it's thinner, it goes first, while thicker textures go on last.
